7 years today!

Today makes 7 years!!

On Halloween Day 2013, Albert got a call from his Surgical Endocrinologist in Austin with the results of his biopsy.  That was the day we met the ‘c’ word.  Specifically, NeuroEndocrine Carcinoma.

Since then we have been leaning left and right into every turn of this crazy ride.  Some roads have been straighter than others, we like the curvy roads the best.  But those hills!!  We have had lots of ups, lots of downs!  We take the uphills slowly so we can anticipate what’s coming, saving our energy for that last push up and over that hill.  We’ve enjoyed all the cruising, enjoying the scenery and stopping to smell the roses every chance we get.

2019 Race Report + pictures

Leaning into the Turn...the name of this blog.  So much of our time is spent leaning into the twists and turns that cancer has brought us, I neglect to publicly acknowledge the fact that Albert has been there for me every step of the way when dealing with my limitations due to my health.  BUT please don't get me wrong, I appreciate ALL that he STILL does for me every day.  I would say that we rely on each other more now than we ever have before.

Especially today, I want to thank Bert for supporting a crazy idea that I had about a year ago.

My New Year's Resolution for 2019 was to complete a 5K every month.  Although he MAY have thought I must be losing it, he never once let it show.  He supported me, got me some gear to get started and believed that I could do it.

And being who I am, I made things difficult.  I put all kinds of conditions on my "qualifying" races!  First they had to be in my home town, I had to be able to walk , not run , and lastly, the charity that I ran for would need to mean something to me.

Well, life happened and I wouldn't meet my goal unless I lightened up on some of those requirements.  For example, I didn't get to do the 5K I signed up for in August (I did two in November to make up for it), they weren't all in my home town because in those hot summer months, it's slim pickins, and sometimes I didn't really consider the charity because I just needed to sign up for something that fit into our schedule.

This morning, with Albert as my biggest fan for EVERY RACE, I completed my 12th 5K of 2019!!  He took all the great (and some not so great) pictures of my before and after, of family and friends who joined us, and some interesting things along the way.

Technically, I feel like I met my goal.

But in thinking about next year's goal, I was really thinking about why I made this resolution in the first place.  I was thinking it would help me get into better shape.  One of my doctors told me that the best way I could help Albert was to make sure I was taking care of my own health first.  So the 12 5Ks were an attempt at "fitness".  In reality, I walked less than I did the year before, I got fatter, and felt like a fraud because I only proved that I could complete my resolution.  I didn't feel like I met my goal to improve my overall health.

What I didn't expect were the GREAT things that came from sharing my resolution with my friends and family.  I got to share many of the races with friends and family that wanted to be a part of my success.  I received the entry fee to many of my races as gifts, and that went along with another love of mine, giving gifts of experiences and not more things that create clutter and chaos.  I got to meet new people and walk in parks/areas that were new to me.  I learned that I'm still 'athletic' even if it looks different for me now.  I also learned that there are some great tools out there for tracking times and distances.  AND I learned that I needed to really look at what my resolution would be for 2020.

2020 will combine two goals that my two primary doctors gave me years ago.  My RA doctor said I need to walk 10 minutes EVERY DAY, no matter what.  Not fast, not far, just 5 minutes in one direction and then turn around and do it again.  BUT, I tried that, and felt like a failure because if I didn't do it ONE day I would give up on myself.  For some reason, the easier it seems, the harder it is for me to actually do.  My diabetes doctor said I need to walk 30 minutes three times a week.  That's kinda what I was doing in 2018, before the grand idea above.  I thought I would keep walking multiple times a week, plus the 5Ks, but it didn't work out that way.

I have decided that in 2020, I will walk for a minimum of 20 minutes, 20 times a month!

This gives me room for bad days, bad weather, and when life chooses to send us through another turn.

I know that Albert will still be there supporting me, he might even walk some of those minutes with me.  He will still believe in me and go along with my crazy ideas.  And I thank God for him every single day!

Since you read all this way...let me show you some of the great pics he took along the way!

January-it was soooo cold! This was a trail run!  It took me 1hr and 6mins and I fell twice due to the very slick mud!

February- Cade joined me for the 5K while Albert and Kasey cheered us on!

March-I actually placed 2nd in my age/gender category!  AND got a silver medal! LOL

April-was one of those powdered color runs...it was messy.

May-was unexpected!  We met up with friends, Shirley, Brianna, and Oreo!
June-was a blast!!  Kasey and our niece Martina joined me AND midway through the race we hopped on a tube and floated the river and went through a chute!

July-was Jake's first 5K since high school, and of course, he got 1st place in his age/gender group!
August-I had to miss the race, but Jake ran AND won 1st place in his age/gender group!
September-Rob and Jake both joined in the fun!  You can probably guess that Jake won 1st in his age/gender category!! (He gets that from me!)
October- Fiddy joined Jake and I for a night time glow run!  Yes, Jake won first AGAIN in his age/gender group! Albert and Jenny cheered us on!!

November- had two races.  At the beginning of the month we joined Lora's team and Jake's winning never gets old!
At the end of the month we did a very hilly and difficult run and Jake's first place win earned him a TURKEY!
December- was my last race of the year!  And my BEST TIME!!  44 minutes, 43 seconds!! YES, those are my Christmas pajamas!
Stay tuned for more updates on Albert and how his 2019 progressed!! (in between my races of course!)

2018! Wow!

Today Albert is celebrating another birthday!!

We are beyond lucky to have had so much time to do so many amazing things together!!

Since I haven't posted in a while, I thought I would celebrate him by posting to the blog and catching everyone up on all the memories we have been busy making!!

Warning!!  LONG POST WITH LOTS OF PICS!

2018!

Let's get some of the medical jargon out of the way.  Albert started a chemo in the Fall called Temodar.  It also caused all the stomach and digestive issues, fatigue, and malaise as his previous treatments, but in general, for about 6 months it was slowing the progression of all his tumors.  In fact, it shrunk the main one that resides in his chest cavity and around his heart.  The first part of 2018, his quality of life was pretty darn good!  So good that we got to do some fun stuff!

We headed to Waco to visit a super cool suspension bridge over the Brazos River!

And traveled to the museum of my absolute favorite beverage...Dr. Pepper!

We celebrated our nephew's 21st birthday!!

We hosted Easter and taught Cade all about cascarones!

Bert, yes, you look good in them shades!

We celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary!!

Basically the event of the year for us!  Our closest friends got together and threw us an amazing celebration.  A beautiful backyard event, sponsored by those nearest and dearest to us, attended by our most amazing friends and family.

A most gracious thank you to the Pratts for your beautiful home and hospitality, the Aults for making us feel like it was our first wedding, Karen for making everyone of those delicious sandwiches, including all of Albert's favorites, Marty and Shirley for all the help and Jenny and Fiddy for keeping us hydrated on a hot day.  We know you all put everything into the planning and preparing, it was an amazing day!

And we did a thing....we renewed our vows on the spot!  The vows may have changed a little, since we made 'em up at that moment.

We traveled to Florida to attend our nephew's beautiful beach wedding, followed by a great time with both of my brothers!

And took some silly pics when we got back to Texas!

Of course we got as much river time as we could throughout the summer!!

My baby brother and his family came to town, so of course we all ATE!!

Albert's baby brother challenged him to take a pic wearing the WRONG jerseys!

We took Albert to Main Event to celebrate his 50th birthday!

Somewhere along the way, the Temodar stopped making a difference and his tumors started growing again.  It was scary because his medical team was scrambling for treatment options.  Remember that at this point, he is no longer a candidate for surgery or any more radiation.  Additionally, because his cancer is so specific, there aren't many meds targeted for it AND it is difficult to get insurance to pay for something that has not been FDA approved for that specific use.  AND that makes sense.  It has to have a remote chance of helping or else you are just putting more toxins in your body for no good reason.  Still scary.  They explained a list of 5 potential treatments, only 2 of which were actually viable options based on Albert's particular case.   Also, he had been having pain in his hip that they couldn't figure out without further scans.  In the end, he decided to wait until we got back from our next trip to start any treatment and getting his hip checked by an orthopedic surgeon.

In late August, we fulfilled one of MY bucket list items and went on our very 1st cruise!   It was a dream of mine to go and I wanted Albert to be part of that experience, so we treated ourselves to an anniversary gift of an Alaskan Cruise!

The cruise started with a trip to Seattle for our port of call!  Thank you for the airline miles, Fiddy and Jenny!!

Our first day at sea was super choppy and rough according to the crew, it didn't seem to bother us one bit and we had no sea sickness!

We enjoyed dressing up for dinner and had a great time at all the shows, bars, and clubs on board.  The pampering was amazing!

Our first port was Juneau, Alaska where we visited the state capitol, saw an amazing 4 story totem pole, spotted more American Bald eagles than we could count, and ate salmon and crab that had just come off the boat!

Then we stopped in Skagway, Alaska and rode the rail to Canada.  Apparently it was one of the clearest days they had had in a while, so the views of the hillsides, wildlife and water falls were amazing!

Next we sailed through the Glacier Bay National Forest where we saw otters, seals, bears, and mountain goats.  Oh yeah and lots of glorious glaciers!

That night we sailed to Ketchikan, Alaska and woke up early to catch a sea plane to an all you can eat salmon and crab bake and all you can drink Alaskan beer.  Followed by a jeep ride back to the boat, through the mountains.  Ah-maze-ing!

Our last port was Victoria, Canada where we visited a super cool castle from the 1890's.  Then got on our only tour bus to sightsee; not our favorite, we like to go at our own pace.

Once we got back to Seattle, we rented a car to drive home, first stop... Seattle Coffee!!!

We took a week to get home, which included 6 more Capitol cities for our 50 Capitols collection, and a few more national parks/monuments; like Yellowstone National Park,

and Mount Rushmore!

A toast to returning home safely!

And back to reality!  New treatments, lots of scans, and more anxiety waiting for results.  Bert started a new medication called Affinitor that had LOTS of side effects.  And a referral to the orthopedic surgeon.

Meanwhile, we celebrated someone else's 50th birthday!

And pulled off another fantastic Halloween ensemble thanks to our daughter's artistic talents.

By the way, just sayin', October 31st marked Albert's 5th year of kicking cancer's butt!

And he got some new wheels!!

He's gotten pretty good at sleeping anywhere!

MD Anderson always does a great job decorating for Christmas!

We had fun sharing another New Year's Eve together.

And we finally arrived at 2019!!

I hope some of you are still with me!!

Next time I will post about this year; which has brought us more opportunities, more uncertainties, surgery, and more bad days than good, BUT it has also brought us more time together, making the most of every day, and of course, more pics!
